Danny thought about everything Addie had said regarding the MacDonald’s. He watched them closely and noticed they hovered near Granny Mary and Harlan all evening. Mr. and Mrs. Dunnigan did too, watching their every move. But why? Did they know something the rest of the family didn’t?

He pondered this as he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Should he say something to Uly? But Uly would want to ask them directly, and if he was being honest with himself, he wasn’t sure he wanted to know the answer. If Shona was giving them a healing potion, something was wrong.

He smiled as he thought of Addie’s concern for his grandparents. Was she already thinking of his family as her own? Folks often did when they visited the farm. His family was welcoming to almost everyone. But that didn’t ease his mind when it came to his grandparents. They were old, no getting around that. They were bound to start having problems. He knew they were in better shape than most, but that guaranteed nothing.

Once again he slept fitfully, worrying over the issue. If a stranger like Addie could see it, how many others did? Were they even paying attention?

When he went down to breakfast the next morning Ma was at the stove turning potatoes. Good, she was alone. He went over and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Morning, Ma.”

She looked at him in surprise. “What was that for?”

“Can’t a son give his mother a kiss?”

She touched her cheek and smiled. “Too bad you don’t do it more often, ja?”

He smiled. “If I did, you’d think I was up to something.”

“I do think you’re up to something.” She poured a cup of coffee and handed it to him. “Sit. Breakfast is almost ready.”

“Where is everyone?”

“I sent Addie to the root cellar to fetch some onions. Irene and Wilfred haven’t come down yet. I think they overdid it last night.”

“What about Granny Mary and Harlan?” He took a sip of coffee and watched her carefully.

“Them too. I swear Wilfred and Harlan were competing.”

“To see who could lift the most bushels?”

“Ja – and at their age. I hope Harlan didn’t throw his back out.”

Before he could inquire further, Pa came in the back door. “Mornin’, son. Where’s yer brother?”

“He’ll be down in a minute.” He might as well ask Pa a few questions. “Do you think Grandpa Harlan will join us today?”

“If he feels up to it.” Pa took the cup of coffee Ma handed him. “Why?”

“I was just wondering, considering how he was lifting full bushels last night.”

“He did seem chipper. He must be feeling good.”

“It’s that concoction Shona gave him,” Ma said. “Grandma Waller and her husband take it now and then, and they swear by it. At least that’s what Irene says.”

“Has she ever taken it?” Danny asked.

“Yes, she has,” Granny Mary said as she came into the kitchen. “Tastes horrible. I could barely get it down.”

Danny slumped in his chair. So that’s all it was. They were feeling good because of Shona’s elixir – nothing wrong with that.
